NCI Releases 2016 Survey Report on DSP Employment and Working Conditions

National Core Indicators released its latest report on employment and working conditions for direct support professionals who work with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: The Staff Stability Survey Report. It features the results of the 2016 survey, run in 20 states and DC and covering approximately 3,000 providers.

Applications for the University of Delaware's National Leadership Institute on Developmental Disabilities to be held January 21-26 will be accepted through November 30.
This week-long, intensive leadership development program is designed for current executive-level leaders and emerging leaders. Participants may work in areas of management or program leadership in organizations that provide, advocate for, or fund supports for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families.
Alixe Bonardi Appointed to Advisory Committee for AAIDD Terminology and Classification Manual

The board of directors of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) appointed Alixe Bonardi, a director of HSRI’s intellectual and developmental disabilities services research team, to serve on the advisory committee for the next iteration of the Association’s terminology and classification manual: Intellectual Disability: Definition, Diagnosis, Classification, and Systems of Supports, 12th Edition.

The board of directors of the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) named HSRI President Emerita Val Bradley as a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Jr. Award for Direct Support Workforce Advocacy & Leadership for 2017. Val was formally recognized, along with fellow recipient, Marianne Taylor (a former HSRI staff member and Project Director on Skills Standards), in Omaha, Nebraska on September 9, during a special ceremony at the NADSP Annual Meeting & Conference.

Are people with autism benefiting from disability reforms and supports to the same extent as people with other developmental disabilities? HSRI staff, along with partner Ari Ne’eman, examined the NCI Adult Consumer Survey data to find out. They discovered that, compared with respondents without an ASD diagnosis, respondents with ASD were less likely to have paid jobs in the community, less likely to have had input into major life decisions, and less likely to be included in their communities.
Check out their newly released article in the journal Inclusion, featuring additional findings and some suggestions for future research and policy.
