Ulster County Behavioral Health Needs Assessment
New York
Opportunity
Ulster County, New York, wanted a clearer picture of the behavioral health needs of its residents and the services available to meet them. HSRI partnered with the Ulster County Department of Mental Health to assess needs related to mental health, addiction, and intellectual and developmental disabilities among youth, adults, and families. The goal was to identify gaps and opportunities to build a more effective, equitable behavioral health system.
Approach
We analyzed data on behavioral health needs, available services, disparities, and geographic differences across the county. Data were gathered from a range of quantitative sources as well as from interviews, focus groups, and public listening sessions with more than 200 community members, including 51 people sharing their own or a family member’s experience receiving services.
Impact
HSRI developed recommendations to help Ulster County strengthen behavioral health services, policies, and programs. The findings were published in a final report and are being used by the Ulster County Department of Mental Health and its partners to develop a five-year action plan focused on improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of the county’s behavioral health system.
