Report on the Capacity of NH's Mental Health System

Date: 12/2017

HSRI was proud to produce a report detailing the capacity of New Hampshire’s health system to address behavioral health needs. We reviewed more than 50 reports, presentations, and datasets, and interviewed 55 stakeholders to identify system gaps that contribute to ER boarding—where individuals experience extended wait times for behavioral health services in hospital emergency departments. We concluded that increasing access to community-based services—such as peer support, crisis and urgent care, housing services, and services for individuals transitioning from inpatient care to the community—is critical to alleviating the burden on hospital emergency rooms.

The report details a series of recommendations that will serve as a foundation for the development of the state's 10-Year Plan for Mental Health.
