Self-Advocates Speak About Support Staff
Turnover among support staff can have a major impact on quality of life for people with disabilities. In fact, nearly half of all support staff for people with disabilities quit within a year. The Riot tackles this issue in a new brief. Featuring content for and by self-advocates, the brief includes firsthand experiences and advice for actively developing good working relationships with staff.

46 and Counting!
Thanks to a concerted effort from the National Core Indicators™ team, along with the support of a 5-year award from the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, NCI participation has grown to 46 states and the District of Columbia!

Celebrating Gini Mulkern
This summer marked Executive Vice President Gini Mulkern’s 35-year anniversary with HSRI—and her relocation from the Boston area to North Carolina! We took the opportunity to hold a party in her honor and share our gratitude for her years of dedicated service.
Current and former colleagues, partners, and clients spoke at the event, praising Gini’s generosity with her knowledge and her impact on their lives and projects. Among other refrains, people consistently describe her as humble, graceful, caring, a great methodologist, and “wicked smart”!

HSRI Staff Co-Author Chapter on QOL Outcome Measures
The recently released Cross-Cultural Quality of Life: Enhancing the Lives of People With Intellectual Disability, Second Edition features a chapter authored by HSRI President Val Bradley, Research Associate Dorothy Hiersteiner, and Senior Policy Specialist Alixe Bonardi. The chapter, “A Focus on System-Level Outcome Indicators,” includes a historical overview of systems-level outcome measures—including the precursors to meta-level measurement and the international quality-of-life movement. The authors also discuss how the measurement of outcome data can affect quality, and they touch on the role that common language plays when it comes to international research and cross-cultural comparisons.

NCI-AD Website Launched, First Report Released
Results are now available from the first deployment of the National Core Indicators – Aging and Disabilities adult consumer survey, an important new tool for the aging and physical disabilities field. NCI-AD™ survey data is collected through in-person interviews with older adults and adults with physical disabilities accessing publicly funded services. Thirteen states are participating in the 2016 data collection cycle, but six opted for a rapid-cycle survey period to receive results more quickly. You can view the fast-tracked results on the new NCI-AD website, nci-ad.org.
National Core Indicators – Aging and Disabilities is a collaborative effort between the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities (NASUAD) and HSRI. The project’s primary aim is to provide valid and reliable data to give states a broad view of how their publicly funded LTSS impact the quality of life and outcomes of service participants.

Familiar Faces—And New
We’re thrilled to welcome back two talented employees—and introduce a brand new member of the HSRI team! Ioana Crisan rejoined HSRI as a research associate for our health data team. She was previously a member of our Data Analysis Coordination and Consolidation Center (DACCC) project for SAMHSA and most recently a research associate for the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Kristin Battis, also a former member of the DACCC project, is returning as a research associate for our behavioral health and health data teams. She recently earned her MPH and worked as a research analyst in the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Aleena Khan, a research assistant with our health data team, is new to HSRI. Prior to coming on board, Aleena served as an intern in the Massachusetts Legislature. She also worked as a research intern at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, assisting on projects related health equity and minority health.
