  • Research Analyst

    Human Services Research Institute (HSRI), a private, nonprofit research and evaluation firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, seeks a Research Analyst to support a team of researchers working on public health related research and program evaluation projects. Applicants should have strong quantitative/statistical skills and should be able to perform a variety of duties such as managing and processing complex datasets, and performing routine statistical analyses under limited supervision.

    Primary responsibilities include:

    • Working (remotely) with social service data collection sites to ensure data quality;
    • Providing technical assistance to data collection sites via individual teleconferences or group webinars;
    • Preparing technical assistance materials for data collection sites;
    • Performing data management, validation, and analysis using applications and statistical analysis software such as Access  and SPSS;
    • Calculating outcome measures and other metrics using Access queries and the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language;
    • Interpreting analysis results; and
    • Presenting results in study protocol/reports and presentations.

    Additional responsibilities may include assisting in preparing study materials, and research proposals as well as writing reports to explain analysis results to non-technical audiences.  The ability to work with minimal supervision on multiple projects with tight deadlines, seek assistance and guidance when required,  use cooperative teamwork skills, and consistently provide a high level of attention to detail are essential. Candidates should have a genuine interest in developing their career in public health, epidemiology, and/or prevention research and evaluation.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • BA/BS in a social/behavioral science discipline;
    • 2-4 years relevant work experience post-graduation;
    • Strong quantitative and computer skills;
    • Proficient in SPSS;
    • Highly proficient in Access;
    • Experience using SPSS in a work setting;
    • Experience writing VBA scripts in Access;
    • Work experience in research methods and statistics;
    • Demonstrated experience working with remote data collection sites;
    • Technical writing skills.

    Desired Skills:

    • Masters in a social/behavioral science discipline;
    • Experience in the fields of substance abuse prevention , public health, program evaluation, or behavioral health;
    • Team work experience;
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate statistical findings to technical and non-technical audiences

    Responsibilities include: data analysis, management and validation as well as creating spreadsheets and databases using applications and statistical analysis software such as SPSS, interpreting analysis results, and presenting results in reports and presentations. Additional responsibilities include writing reports to explain analysis results to non-technical audiences, background research, literature searches/reviews, and assistance in preparing study materials, conference presentations, research proposals, and evaluation tools. The ability to work with minimal supervision on multiple projects with tight deadlines, cooperative teamwork skills, and attention to detail are essential. Candidates should have a genuine interest in developing their career in public health, epidemiology, and/or prevention research and evaluation.
